In September 2018, asialaw & Benchmark Litigation will present its fourth Asia-Pacific Dispute Resolution Awards in Hong Kong, celebrating the most innovative and important disputes of 2017-2018 and the firms that argued them.

The evening will celebrate the foremost leaders in 14 practice areas across 14 jurisdictions around the region. During the evening, there will be awards for dispute stars in each jurisdiction, as well as one Asia-Pacific rising star, one Arbitration practitioner of the year and one Barrister of the year. Firm awards will highlight their strengths in handling contentious matters and the precedents created through their efforts.

Methodology

The Asia-Pacific Dispute Resolution Awards will give law firms, arbitrators and professional services firms the recognition they deserve for their efforts in pioneering the dispute resolution landscape across Asia. The event is split into individual categories and law firm categories.

Applying asialaw’s comprehensive and vigorous methodology, asialaw and Benchmark Litigation editorial staff will undertake detailed research from a variety of sources. Submissions from firms are a vital part of this research. However, asialaw and Benchmark Litigation will also be consulting both private practice lawyers, in-house counsel and barristers. Final decisions will be made by asialaw and Benchmark Litigation and are entirely independent.

Award Categories

Matters of the year

We will be giving awards to the three matters of the year in the Asia-Pacific region that we feel have had the most impact. These can be court matters, arbitration awards or other forms of alternative dispute resolution. For this section, the decision must be final and have been decided between May 2017 and May 2018.  We favour cross border disputes and those that have tested a new area of law. Please only nominate one matter for this award. There is a space on the National Awards form where you can indicate which matter you wish to be considered for this award.

We do understand that in some jurisdictions, international law firms are not allowed to appear in court. If you worked closely with a local firm but feel that you played a key role on a particular matter, feel free to submit that.

National awards

Complete one National law firm of the year form attached for each country in which you are nominating your firm. In each matter, use the matters appendix to tell us about the disputes your firm has worked on that justify its nomination. If a matter has already been submitted as a matter of the year, please refer to it briefly on the national form.

Please note that international law firms are not eligible to apply for these awards.

Australia China Hong Kong
India Indonesia Japan
Malaysia New Zealand Philippines
Singapore South Korea                      Taiwan
Thailand                       Vietnam

Regional Practice Area Awards

Matters that are still on appeal can be included in this section, but more weight will be given to decisions that are final. The decision must have been handed down between May 2017 and May 2018.

Both international and national firms are welcome to apply for this award.

These awards apply to a firm’s entire practice group rather than a specific team within it. Firms can nominate themselves in any or all of the 14 categories. Complete one of the Asia practice area forms for each category, using the matters appendix to tell us about the disputes your firm has worked on that justify its nomination. If a matter has already been submitted as a matter of the year, please refer to that briefly on the practice area form.

Disputes stars, and other individual and firm awards

We will be awarding one disputes star for each jurisdiction, as well as one Asia-Pacific rising star, one Arbitration practitioner of the year and one Barrister of the year. Please list the partners and senior associates and, if applicable, barristers that were involved with each deal on the deal submission forms. Additional information such as CVs, biographies and deal lists is also welcome.

We will also be giving an award to the disputes boutique of the year. This will go to a firm based in the region that has no more than 20 partners and for which dispute resolution is an important focus.

We will also be rewarding an International Law Firm of the Year, Lifetime Achievement Winner and Outstanding Practitioner of the year. These awards do not receive nominations through submission. Asialaw and Benchmark Litigation editorial and research team will form the decision using our vigorous methodology.
