Overview

Asia Practice is a corporate and finance-focused firm with experience in the projects and shipping space. The firm’s clients include corporations as well as market participants and stakeholders. In the past year, the shipping team was busy on more than two dozen deals involving nearly 50 vessels. These matters included ship financing, and sale and leaseback transactions, with a total deal size for 2022 of close to $2 billion.  

Chien Herr Lee is the main partner for corporate and M&A, while Jonathan Tan and Leon Low lead its banking and finance practice.

Asia Practice has been on the bank's panel of approved counsels for over 10 years and has fostered very good day-to-day work relations with the credit admin department of our Singapore branch. Work highlights 

Advised an Indonesian startup focused on bulk ordering for rural communities on its Series A financing round of more than $5 million. 

Assisted a rapidly expanding international corporate solutions service provider headquartered in Singapore on its acquisition of two firms in the same industry, each catering to a specific niche which would facilitate its further expansion in other offshore jurisdictions. 

Represented a startup fintech company in its seed round taken up by a prominent venture capital group active in early-stage investments as lead investor. The transaction helped the startup to raise $1.3 million to facilitate its operations and expansion in the ASEAN region. 

Banking and finance

Work highlights 

Acted for a major domestic airline operator in connection with the sale and leaseback of six of its aircrafts to various lessors.  

Advised CMB Financial Leasing on an operating lease transaction of more than 10 vessels worth more than $250 million chartered by affiliated companies of the Shandong Shipping Corporation. 

Represented various Korean lenders providing financing to a Korean global logistics company in relation to more than a dozen of its various Singapore-flagged vessels. 

Acted for a major Chinese state-owned bank in relation to a $155 million financing transaction for the acquisition of two Very Large Ethane Carriers (VLECs). 

Regulatory

Work highlights 

Advised an international mortgage specialist on licensing requirements in Singapore for its mortgage broking business.  

Advised an SME financing platform on its regulatory and compliance obligations in connection to its proposed money-lending business. 

Advised a Singapore fund manager on the regulatory treatment of a structured note proposed to be offered by it, which had features of a traditional investment product but with its underlying held in novel, digital assets.
