NAME: Shuva Mandal
LAW FIRM: Anagram Partners
PRACTICE AREA: Corporate and M&A
Asialaw’s Lawyer of the Month is Shuva Mandal, the former Tata Sons’ Group General Counsel (GC) who has returned to private practice after four years helming the legal department of the Indian conglomerate. In early June, Mandal confirmed his start at a newly-launched boutique, Anagram Partners alongside former Nishith Desai Associates partners, corporate specialist Simone Reis and tax expert Rajesh Simhan.
Hailed as one of India’s youngest GCs, Mandal joined Tata Sons in 2017, succeeding Bharat Vasani, who had been the company’s top lawyer since 2000. At the time of his move in-house, Mandal was the national practice head of Corporate and M&A at Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co in Mumbai. He was previously a partner at AZB & Partners, where he began his career in 2000.
Part of Mandal’s role when joining Tata was to help develop a legal strategy in the high-profile, long-running courtroom battle between the company and former chairman, Cyrus Mistry. So it was a career highlight for Mandal and his team when the Supreme Court delivered its final verdict, in favour of Tata, at the end of March 2021.
Commenting on his new role at Anagram to law blog, Legally India.com, Mandal said: “We are a just-set-up outfit and these are early days…We are just focused on high quality client service and solving hard issues for our clients. We are keeping it simple. At this stage, it’s just work. Nothing else.”
